Wonder woman, Helene Dillon– Our longest term volunteer and a most familiar face to people at Flexible Living, completing 36 years of service this year. 90 years young Helen Dillon has been truly inspirational volunteer member of the Flexible Living team, and an active volunteer in the community for over 75 years.

Helene says:

“I really enjoy my time of volunteering with Flexible Living, as I have now for many years. I miss seeing my friends during this time of isolation because of the corona-virus, but their health is the highest priority. As I am of a similar age to many of the clients, I have a certain understanding of their likes and needs. And if I can bring some joy to them, or ease some pain, I am delighted to do so. Growing older is not an option, but to be a part of a team that makes life easier, brighter or more pleasant for others is a privilege. And I thank god each day that I have the health to belong to such a great team”.

Helene has worked tirelessly within Flexible Living providing support to older people within the Logan community sharing her time and skills within the Centre based Respite Program giving more than 18000 hours, making over 50000 of her famous scones and supporting more than 5000 people.

Helene’s volunteering started in World War II, with supporting the soldiers, through writing letters of comfort, knitting socks, scarves and other items to keep them warm through those rugged and cold times. Helene continued to volunteer throughout the years, in school tuck-shops, schools and church fundraising groups, which lead to family support work and eventually for the past 35 years supporting elderly people at Flexible Living.

A unique and remarkable woman, she has touched the lives of many in her selfless and relentless work providing for others within the community. Helene is an incredible woman and has a heart of gold. She goes above and beyond just to help another soul.

Helene’s great passion is for caring for the ageing in our community and providing genuine opportunities for friendship and connection for people living in isolated situations. As well as championing for the dignity, respect and well being of people ageing in the community.

It can be said, there is perhaps few who boast such a long and dedicated history of important volunteer work.
